Ankle Sprainsss
An ankle sprain is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn. Sprains happen when the foot is rolled or turned beyond motions that are considered normal for the ankle.
There are three grades of ankle sprains:
- Grade 1 - Damage to only a few fibres. There is pain on stressing the ligament but has not loss in joint stability
- Grade 2 - Damage to a considerable proportion of the ligament. There is considerable pain on stressing of the ligament and has an increased laxity in the joint
- Grade 3 - Severe over stretching of the ligament with a complete rupture. There may or may not be pain on stressing the ligament. The joint demonstrates gross laxity
Symptoms:
- Ankle pain; particularly when weight bearing
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Pain
- Loss of function
- Ankle instability
Treatment:
- To insure the best course of treatment, an accurate grading is essential. Treatment may include:
- Protection- splinting/bracing or taping
- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
- Muscle conditioning and rehabilitation
- Anti-inflammatories
- Surgery, if severe
