Heel Fissures (Cracked Heels)
Cracked heels are splits in the skin of the heel. The cracks form as a result of excessively dry skin and or callus which has lost its elasticity. This callus if left untreated the cracks can become deep and painful and often bleeding. In severe cases this can become infected.
Common causes of Heel Fissures:
- Prolonged standing
- Being overweight
- Wearing open backed shoes i.e. Thongs
- Some medical conditions can cause skin drying out i.e. diabetes and underactive thyroid
- Skin conditions i.e. psoriasis and aczema
Treatment of Heel Fissures:
- Applying heel balms regularly such as Eulactol
- Removal of the dry and cracked skin by the podiatrist
- Footwear education
