Heel Pain (Plantar fasciitis/ Heel spur syndrome)
Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a broad band of connective tissue located along the bottom of the foot that runs from the heel to the forefoot. The plantar fascia is like a rubber band and absorbs shock when you walk.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Burning sensation in the sole of the foot
- Pain worse in the morning or after sitting
- Pain increases over a period of months
Causes of plantar fasciitis:
- Poor biomechanics
- Prolonged sitting
- Poor footwear
- Sudden increase in exercise
- Sudden increase in weight
- Traumatic injury
Treatment:
- Orthotic therapy- A custom orthotic device placed in the shoe can help correct any biomechanical causes such as flat feet
- Stretching
- Strapping
- Massage
- Footwear advice
- Ice
- Acupuncture (dry needling)
