Sever’s Disease (calcaneal apophysitis)
What is Sever’s disease?
Sever’s disease is the most common type of heel pain in children, especially those who are physically active. It occurs in adolescents who are about to begin puberty between the ages of 8 to 14.
Causes of Sever’s disease:
- Overuse and stress on the heel
- Sudden increase in activity levels
- Over pronation (flat feet)
- Poor footwear
Symptoms of Sever’s disease:
- Pain, swelling and redness In the back or bottom of the heel
- Limping
- Walking on toes
- Difficulty participating in usual activities or sports
- Pain when the sides of the heel are squeezed
Treatment of Sever’s disease:
Treatment may consist of one or more of the following:
- Rest
- Ice/Heat
- Compression
- Anti-inflammatories
- Stretching regime
- Immobilisation in severe cases
- Footwear education
- Taping/bracing
- Orthotic management
