Patello-femoral Syndrome
What is Patello-femoral Syndrome (Runner’s Knee)
Patello-femoral pain syndrome (PFPS) generally occurs when the patella (knee cap) does not move or “track” correctly when the knee is bending.
Symptoms of PFPS:
- Dull ache behind or around the patella
- Pain particularly when bending and straightening the leg especially when walking up/down stairs and squatting
- Swelling around the knee
Causes of PFPS:
- Over loading of the joint with specific activities such as running
- Over pronation
- Muscle imbalances
- Other biomechanical problems
Treatment of PFPS:
After identifying the cause of PFPS, an accurate treatment program can be implemented
This may include:
- Rest
- Ice/heat
- Anti-inflammatories
- Training modification
- Footwear education
- Orthotic management
- Strengthening and stretching regime
- Taping/ bracing
