Shin splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
What are Shin Splints?
Shin splints are a common form of lower limb pain which occur during or after exercise. It is caused by excessive stress on the shin bone (tibia) and surrounding muscles.
Shin splints are commonly split into three categories
- Inside of shin pain (Anterior)
- Front of shin pain (Medial)
- Bone pain (Tibial Stress Syndrome)
Symptoms of Shin Splints:
- Vague, diffuse pain along the lower third of the shin with physic.al exertion
- Initially starts with pain on exertion and progress to pain at rest
- Swelling
Causes of Shin Splints:
- Excessive pronation (flat feet)
- High arch feet
- Over use (too much training. Too soon)
- Calf tightness
- Worn out or improper shoes
Treatment of Shin Splints:
It is important to seek treatment for shin pain as soon as possible so we can reduce your time away from, your sporting activity and reduce the chances of complications (ie. Stress fractures).
Some recommended treatment options include:
- Rest
- Ice/Heat
- Anti-inflammatories
- Training modification
- Orthotic therapy
- Stretching and strengthening regime
